Evans, William, 1787-1867

Overview

Letters relating to the emigration of free Blacks to the West African colony of Liberia and establishment of Liberian institutions written to American Quaker reformer, Benjamin Coates (1808-1887) whose work toward the abolition of slavery led to a relationship with many well-known people connected to Liberia, a colony established to offer a new home and a fresh start away from slavery to free Blacks in the mid-19th century.

Abstract

This collection includes photocopies of letters from Joseph and Hannah Evans addressed to their children William, Joseph, and Mary, while they attended Westtown Boarding School. Also included are letters from William Evans to his parents, and from Joseph Evans to his brother. These letters primarily relate family news.

Included in this collection from the Quaker Evans family spanning two centuries (mid-18th-mid-20th), are the journals and diaries of Charles Evans (1870-1958), as well as genealogical and other information on the Bacon, Barton, Carter, Cope, Harlan, Jackson, Rhoads, Shoemaker and Warrington families

Overview The Waltons were prominent Quakers in Philadelphia, Pa., and Belmont County, Ohio. Joseph Walton (1817-1898) taught at Westtown School, edited the Quaker periodical, The Friend, and served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox). His brother, Samuel Walton (1827-1899), moved to Ohio in 1847 and in 1854 married Sarah James Edgerton at Stillwater Monthly Meeting, the center of Wilburite Quakerism in Ohio.
