Abstract

Amelia Mott Gummere (1859-1937) was a noted writer on Quaker subjects. Her published works include The Quaker: a Study in Costume, 1901; The Journal and Essays of John Woolman, 1922; Witchcraft and Quakerism, 1908; and several other works. She was editor of the Bulletin of the Friends Historical Association and President of the John Woolman Association.

Abstract The John Woolman Memorial Association was founded in 1915 by Amelia Mott Gummere. It operates out of a historic house in Mount Holly, New Jersey, where John Woolman's family lived, and where their apple orchard once existed. According to its by-laws, its purpose was "the preservation of John Woolman's house [...], for the purpose of social service in the spirit of John Woolman and for antiquarian interest." This collection consists of letters to Anna Wharton Wood from her brother Edward Wanton Smith and Amelia Mott Gummere about the history of Haverford College. It also includes newspaper clippings and a list of apple trees on the Haverford College campus copied by Wood from the papers of her grandfather, Daniel B. Smith.
