Abstract

This collection contains a series of folders of miscelleneous prints from Seymour Adelman's collection. These prints were put here because they didn't fall into any of his main categories of collecting (architecture, portraiture, publishing, history of Philadelphia, etc.), and because they were not appropriate as objects for the art and artifact collection.

Abstract Very little is known about the early life of Ralph Hodgson (1871-1962), a British poet. In the 1890s, he worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, signing some of his works 'Yorick', and, in 1913, founded "The Sign of the Flying Fame" publishers along with Claud Lovat Fraser and Holbrook Jackson. This collection contains mass-produced prints that have some social or cultural interest. Included in this category are historical prints for popular audiences, caricature prints from newspapers or one-offs, and military prints that were maybe cartoons. These prints do not fall into any clear scientific or art historical categories. They are representative of the popular and wide-reaching aspects of print culture in the 19th century.
