Mary Ellicott Arnold (1876-1968) was a Quaker writer and social activist, known for her work with consumer cooperatives. After an unsuccessful farming venture in her youth, Mary Ellicott Arnold and her lifelong companion, Mabel Reed, worked with the Karok tribe in California as employees of the United States Indian Bureau. The Pennsylvania Committee for Total Disarmament was active from 1930 to 1936, chiefly in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through public opinion and personal contacts, PCTD supporters pressured Congress to support total disarmament, including passage of the Frazier Amendment outlawing war.
