Abstract Sarah Hopper Palmer (1796-1885) was the eldest child of Isaac T. Hopper (1771-1852), noted Hicksite Quaker abolitionist and social reformer. The collection was apparently compiled as a basis for Lydia Maria Child's Life of Isaac T. Hopper, which was first published in 1853. A collection relating to the work of anti-slavery advocate and worker, Nathaniel Peabody Rogers, and the circle of others involved, including John Greenleaf Whittier, William Lloyd Garrison and Susan B. Anthony. There are a number of issues of the Herald of Freedom of which Rogers was the editor.

Abstract

This collection contains the correspondence and legal papers of Samuel L. Southard, New Jersey lawyer and politician, concerning his defense of the Hicksite position in the trial over the Crosswicks School Fund at the time of the Separation in the Society of Friends. The School Fund of Crosswick Preparative Meeting, New Jersey, was claimed by both factions, Hicksite and Orthodox.
