Abstract

This is a northern Italian, late fifteenth-century manuscript containing two texts: Leonardo Bruni's Rerum suo tempore commentarius and his Oratio Heliogabali Augusti ad meretrices, which is preceded by an argumentum.

Custodial History

Written in Northern Italy in the late fifteenth century. Early provenance unknown. On f. ii verso in a 17th century hand: "Continet codex iste nitidissimus Leonardi Aretini Historiarum Sui Temporis Summarium in quo laudes Principum in Italiam tunc temporis dominantium habentur. In fine extat Oratio Heliagabali [sic] ad Meretrices iam edita apud Aldum Anno 1516 in 8 eodem Aretino auctore." On rear flyleaf (f. ir) in lead: "£4/ 1/7/22" and "3950". In the library of Phyllis Goodhart Gordan (bookplate) and John Dozier Gordan, Jr. Unidentified bookplate with initials MT inside a circle below a cross.

Physical Description

Parchment support, ff. ii (modern parchment bifolium, i=front pastedown) + i (contemporary parchment) + 50 + ii (modern parchment bifolium, ii=back pastedown).

Twentieth century, red velvet over boards. Library no. "87" on small paper panel on spine.

ii+50+i; 225 x 146 mm bound to 233 x 160 mm;

Single column, twenty-four lines, ruled in red ink with double vertical bounding lines in red ink or hard point, pricking in the three outer margins; written area: 145 x 85 mm

Humanistic script. Written by a single scribe, marginal notes in the same hand.

The text begins on f. 1r and 43r with 4-line gold initials on a blue ground intertwined with white vine branchwork that is infilled with pink with blue dots and green and blue, with gold dots. Additionally in the lower margin of f. 1r a coat of arms above a spray of parchment branchwork outlined in blue and infilled with green and pink has been effaced so that the device is no longer visible. A similar 3-line initial appears on f. 43v.
