A Journal of a Religious Visit to Germany and Holland by William Farrer as Companion to David Sands in Company with William Savery and Benjamin Johnson and Also George Dillwyn and Wife as far as Pyrmont. Manuscript, 1796-1797. 1 bound volune, 160 pages.
Farrer was a member of the party of Friends who toured Germany and Holland from August 1796 to February 1797. The party included David Sands of Cornwall, NY; William Savery and Benjamin Johnson of... Philadelphia, PA; and George and Sarah Dillwyn of Burlington, NJ. The sole Englishman in the party, William Farrer (1738-1826) was an Elder of Liverpool Meeting, and had earlier guided Sands and other American Quakers through the British Isles.
The manuscript volume contains details about the Quaker communities the group visited. In a lengthy appendix he listed the names and occupations of “sundry people we obtain’d some acquaintance with” in each town, including silk weavers, butchers, schoolmasters, cobblers, maids, shopkeepers, spinsters, soldiers, and clergymen."
