Samuel B. Morris correspondence pertaining to the Schooner "Hebe", 1817
Scope and Contents
This file contains Samuel B. Morris's correspondence pertaining to the Schooner "Hebe," which traveled from Philadelphia to Puerto Rico and Cuba in 1817. The correspondence indicates that one of the schooner's owners, James Elliott Jr., wished to sell the ship in Puerto Rico or Cuba along with its cargo. In one of Elliott's letter to James A. Bartram, the schooner's supercargo, and John Parker, he requested that they sell the "Hebe" in Puerto Rico or St. Jago, Cuba, to the best advantage and use the proceeds to acquire "such articles & in such proportions as supercargo is instructed to ship on accot of E. McDermott & consigning & addressing them to Sam B. Morris of Philadelphia who you will keep advised of all your proceedings." In a February 12, 1817, letter from Puerto Rico, John Parker informed Elliott that the markets were bad and there was little prospect of selling the "Hebe" there, noting that "...the Spaniards are affraid to send out vessels at present on a/c of the Islands being infested with Carthagenian Privateers who capture allmost every vessel they send out." The phrase "Carthagenian Privateers" likely refers to insurgent privateers sailing out from Cartagena, Colombia.
