Physical Description

The sixth and seventh signatures have signature numbers in center of lower margin on recto of first leaf; the ninth signature (the beginning of article 3) is numbered i; however, the eleventh signature is marked "iii" in the same position on f. 126r, one leaf before the beginning of the eleventh signature.

Paper support (watermarks are in gutter; dark ink hinders identification: unidentified bull's head, others indistinguishable)

Contemporary red sheepskin, blind-ruled and stamped, over boards, re-backed. Traces of five bosses on front and back covers; two rectangular brass fasteners on back. Spine has been repaired; on paper label in ink: "46"; Goodhart no.: "ms. # 80" on paper label taped to spine.

ff. 209, 212 x 150 (c. 170 x 100) mm.

C. 35-45 unruled lines, with single horizontal and vertical bounding lines in lead. The written space in article one (f. 1r-v) is c. 180 x 120 mm. with two columns of over 50 closely written lines without visible rulings.

Gothic cursive script, written by a single scribe. Some marginalia in different hands.

The initials in this text look home-made and vary from fair to poor quality. The text begins on f. 2 with an elaborate 8-line red and brown penwork initial on a decorative ground with an extension down the inside margin terminating in a feather. A later doodler has added a simplistic face to the inside of the initial. The first three lines of text, oversized and outlined in brown ink, form a border at the top of the page. Article 4 begins with a similar, less-well-executed, 10-line initial, worked in red, gray, greenish-brown, and a purple-red. A few other smaller (5- to 7- line), and more crudely drawn initials of similar design mark some of the text divisions in article 4. Other text divisions throughout the text are marked by simple 5- to 9-line red and white cut-out initials, sometimes touched with gray. Lesser divisions are marked by 3- to 5-line red initials which occasionally have gray accents or slight extensions. Running heads in article 4 outlined in red. Finding aids in margins, red paragraph markers, rubrication throughout. Guide letters for rubricator are visible.

Contemporary foliation.
