Samuel B. Morris venture to Cadiz, 1812-1813

 File — Box: 2

Scope and Contents

This file contains correspondence and shipping papers related to Samuel B. Morris's venture to Cadiz, Spain, as supercargo aboard the Ship "Ann Maria." The "Ann Maria" was owned by Jehu Hollingsworth, Jr. and this file contains a letter from Hollingsworth to Morris noting that he would prefer Morris sell the ship in Cadiz for upwards of $6000. Hollingsworth also advises Morris "You are now about taking your stand in the World and you must take your chance as well as others that have gone before you. There is one standard Samuel that you may Depend upon and that is simply this: never to do anything that will give you a shamed face or those of your friends, never forget your dear parents and near relations that must & will share in your good Conduct or lament your bad for you can't bring any reproach on your self that will not Reach them, whether it happens at home or abroad, and the further you are from them the more you ought to be on your guard, excuse my freedom."

Another letter from Samuel Hollingsworth & Co. notes that Morris freighted the ship with a cargo of flour and gives him instructions to "do the business of consignment" with Richard S. Hackley Esqr., Consul of the United States, and ensure the remittance is made before he leaves Cadiz.

The file also includes a letter from William Simmons, who remarks on how business is conducted in Cadiz and advises Morris on how to deal with the clerks of various commercial houses and the "health boat" that will place the "Ann Maria" in quarantine.

Several of the letters address the ongoing war with England and speculate that trade with Cadiz may be stopped in the near future.

The shipping papers in this file include sales of cargo in Cadiz, disbursements of the Ship "Ann Maria," a freight list for the "Ann Maria," a bill for attendance on a sailor in the hospital in Cadiz, a manifest of the cargo shipped aboard "Ann Maria," and Morris's accounts with Richard S. Hackley.
