Custodial History

Written in Italy in 1463 by I. F. de Arzignano (near Verona). Early provenance unknown. Inside back cover: “36” (written vertically), “bernardi Santolo B 13”. Owned by Dean P. Lockwood of Haverford College, PA, and bought by Howard L. Goodhart (bookplate) from William H. Allen (catalogue entry taped to inside front cover) in 1947.

Physical Description

Parchment support.

Original, worn red leather over wooden boards; five small bosses on each board with remnants of a strap on upper board and a truncated diamond-shaped catch on lower board with a raised design of the Virgin and child and a lower-case letter “a”; spine cracked and loose. On front cover, in ink (very faint): “[Regulae Gasparis] Veronensis”.

ff. 55 + i, 182 x 123 (115 x 70) mm

Single vertical and upper horizontal bounding lines, full length, in red ink.

Humanistic script, written by a single scribe.

A 7-line blue and red penwork initial with elaborate red penwork extensions extending all down the inner margin begins the text on f. 1r; paragraphs throughout begin with 1- or 2-line initials alternating red and blue.
