Written in Italy in the middle of the fifteenth century. Early provenance unknown. Sale of a deceased nobleman (by Sotheby, 16 Feb. 1931, catalogue entry pasted inside front cover) to Cullum. Formerly owned by Howard L. Goodhart.

Physical Description

Paper suppoert, (Watermarks: similar to Briquet Cercle 3099 and Briquet Tête de boeuf 14766; unidentified mountain), ff. ii (modern paper) + iii (contemporary paper) + 45 + i (contemporary paper) + xvii ( modern paper).

Paris, 19th century gold-tooled red morocco bound by the younger Heritier around the 1840’s. On spine in gold: “CICERO./ ORATION./ MS.” In small letters along lower edge of spine: “HERITIER J.”

213 x 151 (113 x 68) mm.

Written in 25 lines (articles 1, 2, and 5) or 27 lines (articles 3 and 4), ruled with very faint double vertical and horizontal bounding lines in hardpoint (Derolez 13.36). No signs of pricking.

Humanistic script, written by several scribes.

On ff. 12r and 32r, crudely drawn 2-line brown ink initials begin the text; other articles begin with spaces for initials left unfilled; guide letters to decorator visible.
