Abstract
ff. 1v-8r Biblical genealogy beginning with Adam and ending with Paul the Apostle. Genealogy uses both text and diagrams mainly consisting of rondels connected by double lines. ff. 8v-12v blank. ff. 13r-163r First twelve books of the Bible in the usual order as described by N. R. Ker, Medieval Manuscripts in British Libraries, vol. 1 (Oxford, 1969) 96-97. Written in Germany in the 15th century. Early provenance unknown. This is part of a manuscript formerly containing 369 ff. from the collection of Leander van Ess, of Darmstadt, obtained in 1824 by Sir Thomas Phillipps (Middle Hill stamp and n. 628 on f. 1r); his sale (London, 1910, n. 191) to Bishop; this portion only was sold by William B. Gourley (New York, 4 Nov. 1936, n. 72, catalogue entry accompanies ms.; his initials in lead on f. 1r?) to Howard L. Goodhart (bookplate, census no. in lead).

Contemporary full-deerskin over wooden boards, traces of five bosses on upper and lower covers; binding recased, rebacked, and repaired in the corners. On brown leather label on spine: "BIBLIA / MS. / PHILLIPPS 628." On top edge in ink: "Prima Pars Bibla."

Each article has a distinct format. Article 1: 184 x 292 mm., written vertically full across the page, some bounding lines and rulings in lead. Article 2: 234 x 154 mm., written in 48 long lines ruled in hardpoint with single vertical bounding lines in lead or ink. Articles 3 and 4: 234 x 154 mm., written in 46-50 long lines ruled in hardpoint, the first two quires of these articles ar bounded with single vertical and horizontal bounding lines full length in ink, the rest are bounded with single vertical lines in hardpoint running only the length of the text. Articles 5 and 6: 241 x 155 mm., written in two columns, ca. 50 lines ruled in hardpoint with single vertical bounding lines on either side of each column. From ff. 236-260 bounding lines in ink or lead and then erratically thereafter in lead and hardpoint until f. 275. There are three narrowly spaced vertical lines on the right side of both columns marking off columns for Bible citations. Occasional prickings visible in top and bottom margins, especially in later quires.
Gothic cursive script, written by several scribes.
Simply decorated with plain initials, crudely rendered. Books begin with 7- to 9-line initials, chapters with 3-line, verses marked with red strokes; running heads in red; rubrication throughout. The genealogical tables are red with lettering in brown. Instructions for rubricator visible on f. 16r in upper margin.
