Incoming mercantile correspondence from New London, Connecticut, 1815-1816
Scope and Contents
The letters in this file were addressed to Morris by merchants and mercantile firms in New London, Connecticut. Most of the letters are from G. & W. Saltonstall who were shipping herring to Morris in Philadelphia. In the postscript to their September 25, 1815, letter they note that "On Saturday last we were visited with a tremendous hurricane which has destroyed all our wharves & stores--unroofed many houses & greatly injured the shipping in the harbor. Providence & Newport likewise have suffered severely." There is also a letter from Charles and George Starr stating that the profit on barley would be very small given how much it would cost to ship it to Philadelphia.
