Schooner "Hebe" shipping papers, 1817

 File — Box: 2

Scope and Contents

This file contains shipping papers pertaining to the Schooner "Hebe," which traveled from Philadelphia to Puerto Rico and Cuba in 1817. The papers indicate that James Elliott, Jr. was at least partial owner of the "Hebe" and that sundries were sold "for account of Mr. James Elliott by order of Samuel B. Morris, merchant." These "sundries" included dry goods, potatoes, porter, and butter sold in Puerto Rico. The file includes bills for piloting the "Hebe," surveying, watching the schooner while docked, appraising cargo, outfitting the schooner, and paying various customs fees. Several of the bills are in Spanish and there is a current price list for the Puerto Rican market. The file also contains an order of insurance and James Elliott Jr.'s assignment of power of attorney to James A. Bartram and John Parker. There is a detailed list of goods consigned to James A. Bartram. Finally there is a bill of lading for two cases of looking glasses shipped back from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia.
