Letters: Washington, D.C., and Winchester, Va., to family and friends

As a new enlistee in the Union army, Capeling describes his experiences travelling to Washington, D.C., time spent in an army encampment ("There is a rumor afloat that we are to receive marching orders very soon"), and the movement of his regiment to Harper's Ferry. He describes in vivid detail an encounter with the rebel forces near Harper's Ferry. Also included in this folder are two letters written by S. Adelman to the War Department in 1934, division of Civil War Military Resources, asking for additional information on George Capeling, and the responses to his inquiries.
