Friends Select School for Girls paperweight
Scope and Contents
A paperweight made from the doorstop of Friends Select School for Girls, part of Friends Select School located at 6th and St. James Streets from 1834 until 1856, when it burned down. White knob handle on top of small slab of grey marble. Two labels read, “Made from the doorstep of Friends Select School for Girls. St. James St. near 6th and Market, Phila.” and “The school was burned 5 mo. 1st, 1856. From John Carter to Alice H. Carter.” The school relocated to 7th Street in 1857 and remained there until 1886.
