To Davison, 1960
Scope and Contents
c.140 items
The bulk of these letters are casual correspondence from friends such as Jonathan Amsden, Truman Bullard, Joseph Dibble, Giorgio Gaggia, John Greppin, Edward 'Ted' Handy, Anthony 'Tony' Kooiker, Jean Lunn, Alfred Swan, and Noel Waterman. Family members Eloise Hollett Davison, Kay Davison, W. Phillips 'Phill' Davison, and Roderic Davison also write extensively. JD's father passed away in this year, and Hugh Borton and Harmon Dunathon, along with other Haverford faculty members, send their condolences. John Ashmead writes to invite JD to compose the music for an opera he would like to write. Many others write with regards for requests and thanks for permission to perform JD's work and for the receipt of musical scores. Included in these are representatives from the American Music Center, Inc., Cornell University's bands, and the E.C. Schirmer Music Company. Also included is a letter addressed to "John Denison" from Mason Martens about meeting JD in New York City to pick up a score. During this year, JD spent time at the MacDowell Colony and a summer seminar in Advanced Musical Studies at Princeton University, for which there is correspondence relating to JD's application and registration. Walter Piston writes to acknowledge that he has sent a recommendation for JD to the Princeton program. The newsletter from the Séminaire missionnaire de Beatenberg, called "Bible et Prière," is included among the letters.
