Arrangement
This series has two subseries. Letters to Rufus M. Jones are filed alphabetically within chronological arrangement, while letters by Rufus M. Jones are filed chronologically.
Not all letters are listed individually. Those that are highlighted are done so on the basis of content of the letter, the historical importance of the letter writer, or as an example of the topic of several letters. Jones’ extended family members’ letters, offering family news, are occasionally listed for recognition. When information or correspondents repeat, only an example might be given.
Names are sometimes gleaned from evidence and normally would then appear in square brackets ([ ]), but for purposes of sorting, these brackets are removed in the finding aid, but appear on the physical item. Sometimes letters by one person are sorted by personal name, and sometimes by corporate name as appropriate (e.g. M. Carey Thomas and Bryn Mawr College). This organization is usually reflected through the underlining of the corporate name on the physical item. Such arrangement reflects that of Elizabeth Bartram Cadbury Jones and Mary Hoxie Jones and has not been significantly altered. All dates are standardized rather than transcribed, viz: yr mo/day.
As of September 2023, Series I, Correspondence of Rufus M. Jones, is fully digitized and available at https://digitalcollections.tricolib.brynmawr.edu/rufus-jones-papers. Incoming correspondence simply notes the author of the letter, while outgoing correspondence notes both the author and recipient due to the prevalence of letters written by Elizabeth and Mary Hoxie Jones and the need to record to whom Rufus Jones was writing. Subject headings have been added to letters of special interest.
