Scope and Contents
Early letters deal with start of his business career as merchant and give interesting insight into how consignment business operated; tells of trip to New England, to obtain customers; speaks of needing a counting house for people to address consignments to. License as “Retailer of Merchandize” [sic] in Phil., dated Jan. 18, 1816. Letter of 3mo. 14, 1833, speaks of loneliness after death of wife, Hannah (Perot). Letter of 7mo. 16, 1833, to his children, describes ride on one of first railroad trains; letter of 7mo. 19, 1833, describes city of Washington
