Scope and Contents

1. Notebook of arithmetic problems, 1834, perhaps created by a teacher for her or his students. An appended note says it belonged to grandfather Chalkley A? or G?

2. On the inside back cover, inscribed Joseph Walton and Jane Swift, 1838. Perhaps a commonplace book, which may also contain original verse

3. Tooled "Jane Swift" on the cover, a commonplace book of verses dated from 1834-1843 with various authors' names inscribed, also drawings of flowers. Comments on the texts by Catherine Blecki, 1995, included

4. Anna J. Swift, 1846. Mostly original verse: on poetry, on death of her mother, a dream she had, etc.

5. Elizabeth G. Swift "Daily Journal," 1851. Begins "I attended meeting this morning. Nathan Douglas and Nathaniel Sands were there." Also contains compositions or stories.

6. Inscribed D.J. Wills on the flyleaf, the notebook contains manuscript notes on various businesses; also recipes, 1850s
