Biographical / Historical
In1940 all three colleges were looking for new presidents and they invited the new presidents to pursue an "organized arrangement" of cooperation. During the first 8 years (1940-1948) a number of steps toward cooperation were undertaken, including: temporary loan and exchange of faculty during war and subsequently; joint appointments; student exchanges with first fully joint program for Russian Studies (funded by Carnegie); information, advice, and... comfort for three presidents; advisor on W.A.A. [War Administration…?] purchases; library efficiencies; Haverford/Bryn Mawr dramatics, orchestra, and literary magazines; international relations club; club or dormitory exchange parties. Obstacles to cooperation included: distance; lack of communication among faculty; different scheduling and academic requirements; budgets; different educational aims; financial commitments; lack of time (See Three-College Cooperation—General).
