Scope and Content note

This volume includes extracts from Pemberton's diary "of a Voyage from Philadelphia to London in the ship Carolina, Stephen Mesnard, Master." Entries describe the voyage from Philadelphia to England, including descriptions of weather, other passengers on board, and the passing of various other ships throughout the voyage. Upon his arrival in England, Pemberton's entries focus on descriptions of his visits to various towns and cities throughout England, including Canterbury and Bath.

Biographical note

John Pemberton (1727-1795), was born in Philadelphia, Pa, in 1727, to Israel Pemberton and Rachel Read.Pemberton served as the clerk of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting for Minister and Elders Pemberton never married, and died in Philadelphia on January 31, 1795.

Acquisition

The John Pemberton diaries were donated to Special Collections, Haverford College, in 1934 by Eleanor R. Elkington.
