Financial records, 1830-2016

The financial records in this series have been arranged into seventeen sub-series and several standalone files based on their subject matter, their format, or some combination of the two.

The first sub-series, "Friends Central School Association/Haverford School Association records and other early financial records, 1830-1892," includes records from the first few decades in which the Haverford School (later Haverford College) operated. Materials relate to stock subscriptions to the Haverford School Association, student expenses and tuition payments, School expenses, and the accounts of the Haverford farm. Some materials reference the "Friends Central School Association," the earlier name of the Haverford School Association.

The "Campaigns, 1882-1968" sub-series contains records on several of the College's capital campaigns and endowment campaigns from the late nineteenth to the mid twentieth century. The majority of the files relate to the Haverford College Centenary Campaign.

The third sub-series, "Budgets and salaries, 1907-2012" contains salary lists for the first half of the twentieth century and budgets from the early twentieth century to the early twenty-first century. Some budgets are also included in the Haverford Financial Papers files of the "Financial statements, trial balances, and fiscal year documents, 1883-2016" sub-series.

The "Funds and Investments, 1833-2014" sub-series includes materials pertaining to the Permanent Fund, the Deficiency Fund, the Isaac Sharpless Fund, the Gummere Fund, The William Maul Measey Trust, and the Charles A. Dana Scholarship Fund. It also contains more general reports on the endowment funds of the College, materials related to the sale of lots in Netherwood Farms and Beverly Hills, stock transfers, and worthless securities.

The fifth sub-series, "Financial statements, trial balances, and fiscal year documents, 1883-2016," contains a wide variety of financial records, including financial statements, monthly and quarterly statements, charts of accounts, lists of securities, rentals, budgets, trial balances, reports of cash received and disbursed by the College, and fiscal year documents. It is likely that some of the materials in this sub-series duplicate those found in other sub-series.

The sixth sub-series, "Board of Managers and Corporation, 1926-2012," includes financial records pertaining to and submitted to the Haverford College Board of Managers and the Corporation of Haverford College. Most files are financial materials for the annual meeting of the Corporation.

"Grants, 1989-1995" is a small sub-series containing materials on the Institutional Assistance Grant Program.

The eighth sub-series, "Reports, 1939-2008," contains a wide variety of financial reports including reports of the Comptroller, reports of the Treasurer of the Corporation, combined reports of the Comptroller and Treasurer, and financial reports from the Vice President of Business Affairs.

The "Improvement Company records, 1910-1945" sub-series relate to the administration of housing on College Lane by the Haverford College Improvement Company.

"Insurance, 1859-1933" is a smaller sub-series containing miscellaneous materials related to Haverford College insurance policies. The file "Haverford College Insurance (1 of 6), 1917 October - 1933 June" contains inventories of several buildings on campus dating to 1917.

The eleventh sub-series, "William Penn Foundation, 1924-1932," consists of pledges, accounts, bank statements, and correspondence relating to the William Penn Foundation, probably pertaining to the creation of an endowed professorship.

The "Correspondence, 1839-1945" sub-series mostly relates to the finances of the Haverford School in the mid nineteenth century and funds raised for the endowment in 1920.

The "Haverford College Administrative Advisory Committee" sub-series contains the meeting minutes of the Committee from 1990-2004.

The fourteenth sub-series, "Receipts, 1862-1902" consist mostly of loose receipts from the second half of the nineteenth century.

The "Library addition financial documents, 1939-1945" sub-series contains financial documents and correspondence related to an addition and alterations to the old library stack building.

The "Donations to Haverford College" sub-series contains information on donations to the College from 1954 to 1965.

The final sub-series, "Miscellaneous, 1860-2013" primarily consists of what seems to be the alphabetical correspondence of J. Henry Scattergood, Treasurer of Haverford College. The remaining files contain a true miscellany of financial records.

There are also four single files in this series related to the College's 1966 accounting codes, Dick Wynn's manuscript on the financial history of Haverford College, agreements and deeds of trust, and the College's tax exempt status.
