Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of the original, handwritten manuscript of George W. Taylor's 1887 autobiography, entitled "Recollections of my Life Time and what I have learned from my Ancestors," and a modern typed transcription of the manuscript, with an introduction, summary, and index for personal names, locations, and Meetings and Meeting Houses included in the manuscript. The transcript was compiled by a later relative.

In the volume, Taylor describes his family genealogy, his early education, his experiences growing up as a Quaker and a conversation he had with Elias Hicks, his career as a teacher in New York and Pennsylvania, and his business selling slave-free labor dry goods during the Civil War.

Biographical Note

George Washington Taylor (1803-1891) was born in Radnor, Delaware, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Richards Taylor. Taylor was a teacher; he taught in Flushing, New York, and at Westtown School in Westtown, Pennsylvania. He later became the publishing agent of "The Friend." From 1845 until the end of the Civil War, Taylor was a merchant of slave-free labor goods. George W. Taylor was married three times: to Elizabeth Sykes in 1831, to Ruth Leeds in 1864, and to Elizabeth Burton in 1885, but he never had any children. He died in 1891.
