Biographical / Historical

Holland Hunter, Haverford class of 1943, was an influential scholar on the Soviet economy and Professor of Economics at Haverford. Born in 1921 in Evanston, Illinois, he attended a boarding school in Colorado, whose headmaster was a Haverford alumnus and who inspired him to attend the College. He graduated with a degree in Economics, which he also later pursued at M.A. and Ph.D. levels at Harvard University. He returned to Haverford in 1949 and remained a professor there until his retirement.

Dr. Hunter specialized in the transportation policy of the Soviet Union, assembling a wide range of books and publications during the 40 years of his career. He did research for the Brookings Institute, the National Science Foundation, the Russian Research Center at Harvard, the Harriman Institute at Columbia University and other organizations. He served for three years as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Soviet Studies and several times on selection committees for the Social Science Research Council and the International Research and Exchanges Board. He was also an active member of Haverford Friends Meeting and sat on the boards of the Haverford Friends School and the Baldwin School.

In 1945, Hunter married Helen Manning Hunter, a former professor at Swarthmore College and a former Head of the Economics department at Bryn Mawr College, with whom he had three children: Timothy, Christine and Ann. He died in 2014, aged 92, at The Quadrangle, a retirement community for people who enjoy an intellectual environment, in Haverford, Pennsylvania.
