Scope and Contents

This collection consists primarily of financial documents pertaining to Haverford College in the second half of the nineteenth century and the 1950s. Financial documents include certificates of shares in the Haverford School Association, receipts of payment, insurance documents pertaining to the College's electricity and steam boiler, and a series of canceled checks issued by the school in 1841 as well as under Caselli's tenure in the 1950s. The collection also includes nineteenth-century envelopes addressed to individuals at Haverford, letters regarding a meeting of the Loganian Society in 1839, a copy of a letter regarding the formation of a "Scientific and Classical Library," a copy of plans for Founders Hall, and an advertisement for a 1952 concert at Roberts Hall.

Biographical / Historical

Aldo Caselli was the comptroller and business manager at Haverford College for over twenty years. Caselli was born in Italy and graduated from the University of Naples. He lived in Egypt from 1933 to 1938, where he learned to read and speak Arabic. Caselli first came to Haverford College during World War II to teach in the Army Specialized Training Program in Italian Area and Language. In addition to his work in the financial operations of the College, Caselli taught courses in Italian language, Dante, and Italian operatic history. He wrote a historical monograph on Italian opera, worked as a literary critic, and conducted studies on the organization and operation of higher education institutions in Italy and the United States. Caselli left the College in 1965 and died on September 9, 1966.

Separated Materials

An 1895 athletic pin awarded to John A. Lester for track an field, eight silver rounded tip spoons with the engraving "H.C.", and fourteen silver demitasse spoons with the engraving "Haverford College" have been added to the Haverford College artifacts and realia collection (HCU).
