Scope and Contents

This collection consists of press releases, letters, and newspaper clippings between 1953 and 1954 concerning the trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were accused of espionage during the Cold War and Red Scare, as well as the fate of their two sons, Michael and Robert Robinson. There are four article clippings from The Gazette Daily, The New York Times, and The Jewish Chronicle regarding disagreement over the verdict of the Rosenberg Trial and concern for the couples’ sons. There are two press releases delivered by Percy Belcher, the Secretary of the National Rosenberg Defence Committee. There is a letter from the Manchester Committee for Clemency for the Rosenbergs to a news editor, a letter from the secretary of the Rosenberg Defence Committee, a letter from members of the National Rosenberg Defence Committee requesting various newspapers to publish support for funds for Michael and Robert Robinson, a typescript from the Day-Jewish Journal summarizing the trial regarding the Rosenberg sons at the Children’s Court, a letter requesting Mr. B. Gardener to issue a statement of support for the children, and a fact sheet about Michael and Robert Rosenberg issued by the National Rosenberg Defence Committee. There is also a list of Scottish Organizations.

Historical note

The collection pertains to the trial and aftermath of the trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were accused of being communist spies during the Cold War and Red Scare. They were convicted of espionage in 1951. Their sons, Michael and Robert Rosenberg, became orphaned after Julius and Ether were executed by the federal government in 1953.
