Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two copy letter notebooks written by Samuel F. Troth between 1852 and 1861. The first notebook contains a collection of letters from June 1853, addressed to his daughter, Elizabeth T. Troth, of Samuel Troth's travels, including from his time in New York, Boston, Albany, Cincinnati, and the Niagara Falls (Canadian side). Samuel Troth also includes a letter to his son, John T. Troth from 1861, of his time on a farm in Ohio with Mary Troth (wife of Samuel Troth). The second notebook contains various letters from Samuel Troth to friends and family about various events between 1852 and 1861. There is also one letter written by Edward H. Bonsall, a Troth family friend.

Biographical Note

Samuel Fothergill Troth (1801-1886), son of Samuel Troth and Ann Berry, was a prominent Quaker Philadelphia pharmacist and apothecarist. He helped run a drugstore, owned by his brother, Henry Troth, and soon became a partner in the firm, Henry Troth and Co.Troth was also a member of the Society of Friends. He married Mary Trimble in 1828 and had six children: Elizabeth Trimble Troth, John Trimble Troth, Ann Berry Troth, Mary Troth, Sarah Jane Troth, and Samuel Henry Troth.
