This collection contains a single letter, dated June 6, 1884, from Marriot C. Morris to his mother. Morris covers several personal topics relating to a visit from his cousins and his mother’s recent ailment before discussing the sale of his carpet. He ends by relaying the dinner invitation from the President of Haverford College, Thomas Chase, to the junior class and mentions that Chase had not hosted students since the death of his wife during the previous year.

Biographical Note

Marriott Canby Morris (1863-1948) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Elliston Perot Morris and Martha Canby Morris. He attended Haverford College from 1881 to 1885 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Morris took up photography and cycling, becoming proficient in both. Morris married Jane Gibbons Rhoads on June 8, 1897 and the couple had three children: Elliston Perot Morris Jr., Marriott Canby Morris and Janet Morris. He died on March 2, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA.
