Biographical Note
Deborah Fisher Wharton (1795-1888) was an American Quaker minister, suffragist, and social reformer, as well as one of the founders of Swarthmore College. She was born on October 25, 1795, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Samuel Rowland Fisher and Hannah Fisher. In 1817, Wharton married William Wharton, and the couple had ten children: Hannah (1818-1893), Rodman (1820-1854), Sarah Wharton (1821-1866), Charles William (1823-1902), Joseph (1826-1909), Mary (1828-1856), William (1830-1907), Samuel (1832-1843), Anna (1834-1893), and Esther Fisher (1836-1915). Deborah Fisher Wharton died on August 16, 1888, at the age of 92.
