The Life of the Lady Guion

 Collection — Volume: 1
Identifier: HC.MC-801-07-004

Scope and Contents

The majority of this volume consists of "The LIfe of the Lady Guion [...] written by herself in French and abridged and translated into English by James Gough." This is a manuscript copy, possibly written by Mary Horne, whose name is at the top of the title page. The main section also contains a chapter from Guyon's "A short and easy method of prayer." The work in question is likely copied from a printed version published in Bristol in 1772; Gough was a Quaker and intended his work for an audience of Friends.

Beginning at the end of the book are several manuscript letters and extracts concerning the deaths of John Pemberton, Job Scott, and Richard Shackleton and an account of the drowning of several persons after attending Quarterly Meeting. These materials are in a different hand than the Guyon materials.

The volume is bound in vellum over boards.

Biographical Note

Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon (known as Madame Guyon) lived from April 13, 1648, to June 9, 1717. She was a French mystic who is known as a quietist, although she did not identify herself as one. Her religious ideas were controversial, and she was imprisioned in the Bastille for seven years.

In addition to her autobiography, Guyon also wrote "The Short and Easy Method of Prayer" as well as several other religious texts.
