Biographical Note
Charles Wood (1851- 1936) was born June 3, 1851, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of John T. Wood and May Lyon Wood. Wood was educated at Haverford College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1870 and Master of Arts in 1873, and Princeton Theological Seminary, where he was given the degree of Doctorate of Divinity in 1885. After his graduation from Princeton, he was ordained a minister of the Presbyterian Church. He served as a pastor at the Central Church, Buffalo, New York, from 1873 to 1878, the First Church at Germantown, Pennsylvania from 1886 to 1896, the Second Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1896 to 1908, and the Church of the Covenant of Washington D.C. from 1908 until his retirement in 1928. Charles Wood was also an author; his works included: "Saunterings in Europe" in 1882, "Beginning Life" in 1887, "Friends and Foes of Youth" in 1898, and "Some Moral and Religious Aspects of War" in 1915. He was also the author of the William B. Noble Lecture at Harvard University. Charles Wood married Mary Hollingsworth Morris in 1883, and the couple had six children: Margaret E. (1883), William P. (1884), Emily (1887), James S. (1889), Mary E. (1890), and Catherine N. (1891). After the death of his first wife in 1891, Wood married Alice Cox in 1905, and had Charles Morris and Marguerite P. (Mrs. Logan MacCoy). Charles Wood died in New York in 1936.

Abstract
A collection of poems compiled by Charles Wood during his time at Haverford College. These poems were transcribed by Wood and other classmates from 1866 to 1870, and detail religious, spiritual, and patriotic poems at the time. After his time at Haverford, Wood went on to recieve his Doctorate of Divinity in 1885, but records in the commonplace book stop after 1870.
