Scope and Contents
The Henry Hale Graham Sharpless commonplace book from 1839 contains writings and excerpts collected by Sharpless during his junior year at Haverford College. There are engraving prints interspersed throughout the book, and the writing is handwritten in ink. The book was a gift of Mrs. Nigel Cholmeley-Jones in 1954.

Biographical / Historical
Henry Hale Graham Sharpless, the son of Townsend Sharpless and Mary B. Jones Sharpless, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 12th, 1823. Sharpless entered Haverford College in 1836 and graduated class of 1840. In 1855, Sharpless married Mary Van Buren, who was disowned by her Meeting for marrying a non-member. Sharpless ran a dry goods business in Philadelphia, which was started by his grandfather. Sharpless died in Chester Hills, Philadelphia, on April 15th, 1870, at the age of 46.

Abstract
The Henry Hale Graham Sharpless commonplace book was created during Sharpless' time at Haverford College. Sharpless graduated class of 1840, but the book notes many written records and excerpts during 1839 in his junior year. The book contains carving prints from various artists paired with excerpts hand written by Sharpless himself.
