Conditions Governing Access

Due to age and condition of materials, researchers may be asked to use microfilm version of M. Carey Thomas Papers in place of the originals.

General

Series II: Official Papers is made up of seven sub-series. All extant official records of M. Carey Thomas's administration as president of Bryn Mawr College are included.

Sub-series I: Presidential Letterbooks. Correspondence in Thomas’s letterbooks begins with letters dated December 1897 and concludes with her relinquishment of the office in September 1922. The run of college-year letterbooks is followed by scrapbooks of official correspondence produced by Thomas while on vacation and of copybooks of her handwritten letters. The quality of the letterpress (later carbon) copies varies greatly from volume to volume and page to page.

Sub-series II: Unbound Correspondence. Outgoing and incoming letters have been filed into separate chronological sequences, with undated items and fragments appearing at the end of each. Because of the imbalance in volume between Thomas’s Incoming and Outgoing (the official letterbooks plus unbound outgoing letters) Correspondence, it must be assumed that a sizable quantity of her incoming mail has been lost.

Sub-series III: Subject Files. Subject files are archival records from M. Carey Thomas's presidential files are organized topically and filed alphabetically by subject. This consists of materials like copies of Thomas’s speeches, minutes of meetings, reports, memoranda, third party correspondence, clippings, notes, ephemera, etc.

Sub-series IV: Speeches. Speeches are arranged alphabetically, either by occassion or subject. Speeches given at repeated occassions like Commencement or the Freshman Address are further arranged in rough chronological order.
