Georgiana Goddard King papers
Scope and Contents
The Georgiana Goddard King papers house the personal papers of Georgiana Goddard King, Bryn Mawr class of 1896 and former professor of art history at the college. The collection is from circa 1874-1939, and consists of handwritten notes on art subjects, correspondence, and publications.
The collection consists of two series: “Series I: Handwritten notes on various topics” and “Series II: Miscellaneous correspondence, biographical material and publications.”
“Series I: Handwritten notes on various topics” contains King’s notes on various art subjects, including Spanish painters, early Italian painters, church frescoes, Turkish poetry, wooden architecture of the North. There are also some art history papers (not by King) along with the rest of the King material. Finally, it contains a MS for a Portuguese notebook. “Series II: Miscellaneous correspondence, biographical material, and publications” contains an incomplete listing of publications; materials concerning King’s friendship with Gertrude Stein; various publications; and obituaries and memorials.
King founded the History of Art department at Bryn Mawr and was an acknowledged authority in the field of art history, in particular the art of Spain. This collection provides unique insight into King’s notes. It would be useful for art history students and researchers, especially those interested in the art of Spain and Italy.

Biographical / Historical
Georgiana Goddard King graduated from Bryn Mawr College with an A.B. in 1896. She was a philosophy fellow in 1897 and a fellow in English in 1897-98. She studied for a year in France and then taught in Miss Graham's School, New York City, until 1906. She returned to Bryn Mawr College in 1906 as a Reader in English, and in 1911 she became Lecturer in History of Art and Comparitive Literature. In 1913 she founded the college's History of Art Department and became its first chair. She continued to teach at Bryn Mawr College until 1935 when she retired to California where she lived until her death in 1939. She was an occasional traveling companion of M. Carey Thomas and a friend of Gertrude Stein. She was an acknowledged authority in the field of art history, and in particular the art of Spain.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Exact provenance for these materials is unrecorded. Much appears to have been left behind upon King's retirement from the college. Other materials have been transfered to the college archives in the ensuing years.
