Scope and Contents
The Sadie Bell research notes houses the 1930 dissertation, research notes and clippings of Sadie Bell, Bryn Mawr class of 1912. The collection is divided between 2 boxes. One box houses the manuscript for Bell’s Ph.D. dissertation, entitled The Church, the State, and Education in Virginia. There are also clippings and articles, related to the legal aspects of religion in education, including a number of items on the 1925 "Scopes Monkey Trial." Bell received her Ph.D. in education from the University of Pennsylvania, going on to teach high school and junior high classes in Welch, West Virginia. Her dissertation speaks to a highly topical issue of the day: the relationship of church, state, and education. It would be useful to anyone looking to gain a perspective on education in the 1920-30s.

Abstract
Sadie Bell was a member of the class of 1912. She earned her A.B. in 1912 and her M.A. in 1913. In 1929, she received a Ph.D. in education from the University of Pennsylvania. She then went on to teach high school and junior high classes in Welch, West Virginia. The Sadie Bell research notes houses Bell's 1930 Ph.D. dissertation, entitled The Church, the State, and Education in Virginia.
