Elsie Kohn Rauh scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Elsie Kohn Rauh scrapbook contains the one volume scrapbook of Elsie Kohn, Bryn Mawr class of 1904. The scrapbook covers Kohn’s first two years at Bryn Mawr, from 1900-1902. Kohn left Bryn Mawr in 1902 to care for her mother, so in addition to the typical memorabilia, this scrapbook also contains letters from friends regarding her decision to leave.
The scrapbook consists of one volume. It contains much of the usual memorabilia, programs, calling cards, but with hand-written commentary on each entry. Highlights of the scrapbook include: calling cards, toast lists from 1901-1902; humorous notes and poems from friends; a poem by Elsie Kohn entitled ‘Oh to be a Freshman Once More;” a collection of “characteristic Bryn Mawr bills” such as laundry, drug store, groceries, etc. 1901; a typed list of “honorary corresponding secretaries who can answer queries about the college throughout the country; a correspondence from friends- with some photographs, and letters from “after I had decided to give up college” to take care of her mother 1901-1902.
The scrapbook is small, but it is very neat and well labeled. It would be of value to anyone interested in Bryn Mawr history at the turn of the century, Elsie Kohn, or the experience of someone leaving Bryn Mawr early.
