Mabel Lang papers
Scope and Contents
The Mabel Lang papers contain the personal papers of Mabel Lang, professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr College and renowned classics scholar. The collection has not been definitively dated, but it can be surmised that the materials date from around 1943-1988, when Lang was a professor at Bryn Mawr. The collection provides insight into Lang’s research on Thucydides, materials related to her classes, and more.
The collection is divided into six series: “Series I: Class Materials,” “Series II: Manuscripts,” “Series III: Miscellaneous Notebooks,” “Series IV: Offprints for Thucydides,” “Series V: Lang Graduate Manuscripts,” and “Series VI: Miscellaneous Notebooks.”
“Series I: Class Materials” contains materials from Lang’s classes taught at Bryn Mawr, including materials on Aristophanes, Epigraphy, Herodotus, and Greek Historiography. “Series II: Manuscripts” contains Lang’s manuscripts on Homeric Ideas, Law Courts, Alcibiades vs. Phrynichus. “Series III: Miscellaneous Notebooks” contains miscellaneous notebooks. “Series IV: Offprints for Thucydides” contains folders of offprints from various publications. “Series V: Lang Graduate Manuscripts” contains a manuscript of The Greek Paean and Pindar, and a draft copy of a BMC dissertation. “Series VI: Miscellaneous notebooks” contains miscellaneous notebooks.
Lang was a respected scholar of classics and beloved Bryn Mawr professor. Although small, this collection provides valuable insight into her teaching style and research. It would be of use to classics students and scholars.

Biographical / Historical
Born November 12, 1917, Mabel Lang grew up in Hamilton, New York. She received her B.A. from Cornell in 1939, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College, in 1940 and 1943 respectively. She began teaching Greek at Bryn Mawr in 1943, becoming Chair of the Department in 1961, a position she held until 1988. She was also active in the college administration from 1970 to 1975, as the Acting Dean of the College, Dean of the Sophomore Class, and Secretary of the Faculty.
A greatly respected professor and scholar, Lang wrote twelve books and over fifty articles, addressing history, epigraphy, and archeology. Her research on Herodotus, Homer, and Thucydides was well-received. She was a Fellow of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and involved in the excavation of the Acropolis and the Agora. In addition to her scholarly work, she received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellow ship to Greece, three honorary degrees, and a membership in the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the German Archaeological Institute, Phi Beta Kappa, and Phi Kappa Phi.
Lang passed away on July 21, 2010.
