Abstract Genevieve Thompson Smith was born December 2, 1885 in Portland, Oregon. She was prepared for college by the Portland Academy in Portland and Mrs. Hartman’s School in New York. She attended Bryn Mawr College from 1903-1905 and the University of Oregon Law School from 1911-1913. She moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked in the Russian section of U.S. Army intelligence during World War I. In 1921, she married Admiral Norman Murray Smith.
