Biographical / Historical

Collins’ close friend, Hilda Worthington “Jane” Smith, was born in New York in 1888, and died in 1984. She earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from Bryn Mawr, and was granted a diploma from the New York School of Social Work. In 1916 she became the Director of the Bryn Mawr Community Center, and from 1919-1922 served as Dean of Bryn Mawr College. In 1921 she was named Director of Bryn Mawr Summer School for Women Workers. Smith was appointed Director of the Workers’ Service Program under the WPA and later served as Chief of the Project Service Section of the Federal Public Housing Administration. From 1965-72 she served as a consultant to the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington.
