Biographical / Historical

Thomas Smedley (1833-1875) married Philena Yarnall (1833-1921) in 1855, and they had seven children before Thomas's early death. After his death, Philena's unmarried twin sister, Lydia H. Yarnall, moved to Middletown to help with the family. A son died in infancy; Lydia H. Smedley married Edward L. South; Harriet J. married William Kirkbride; Walter Smedley married Ida W. Roberts; Horace married Anna R. Hoopes; his twin Rebecca (1867-1950) was a book-keeper and stenographer and served as an Elder at Chester Monthly Meeting; Emma (1868-1944) graduated from Drexel University and taught dietetics and domestic science at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore.
