Biographical / Historical
Two of the earliest Pocono resorts were founded by rival factions of the Philadelphia Quaker community: Inn at Buck Hill Falls (1901) by Hicksite Quakers and Pocono Manor (1902), founded by members of the Orthodox branch.
In 1901 an Association composed of Orthodox Philadelphia Quakers purchased a tract of land in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, on the crest of Little Pocono Mountain. Chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as the Pocono Inn Company, construction of the Inn was begun in 1902, and a public sale of lots became the Cottage Colony.
Walter Smedley designed the Inn and additions and served as Association President. Philena Y. Smedley, widow of Thomas Smedley, and four of her children: Lydia, Walter, Rebecca and Emma, purchased lots for a cottage.
