Edith K. Bushong family papers

Abstract

These papers include the journal of Edith Bushong from 1856 to 1858, detailing the life of the wife of a 19th century Quaker farmer. The papers also include essays and a copy book of Abraham Rakestraw, recording his editorial letters to newspapers under various pseudonyms.

Abstract The collections contain journals, correspondence, and miscellaneous Quaker papers. A small journal kept by Thomas Carman, 1864 and 1867, describes his travels which included upstate New York, Baltimore, and Richmond (where he attended general Quaker meetings and visited African American services). George D. Cock Family Papers

Abstract

This small collection includes George D. Cock's journal in two bound volumes of his trip in 1843 from his home in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, through Quaker communities in the East, including Philadelphia and Baltimore. The journal includes comments on his courtship of Susan W. Smith, who he married in 1845. The collection also includes a balance sheet from 1843 on freight carried, his marriage certificate, and a letter from his daughter, Marion Cock, which includes family information.

Sadie Sharpless Green family papers

Abstract

This collection includes the commonplace book of Sarah Sharpless Green, the writing book of her sister Amy Sharpless, and the copy book of her daughter Sadie Sharpless Green. In her journals are personal notes, poetry, newspaper clippings, and manuscript copies of spiritual writings. The most substantial of these is the account of the life of Quaker minister Ruth Anna Lindley.

Redman family papers

Abstract

This collection includes Mercy Redman's journal of her visits to eighty-seven meetings in New York, New England, and Pennsylvania. During this time she met and travelled with John Woolman. Also included is a copy of the record kept by Thomas Redman of his imprisonment and trial for refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the United States. A poem written by John E. Redman and various other family documents are also included.

Samuel Smith papers

Abstract This collection includes 10 memorandum books of Samuel Smith, recounting his experiences as a travelling Quaker minister on his journeys in the eastern United States, Liverpool, London and Scotland. Also included is the copy book of a certain "S.B." of Darby Monthly Meeting, dated 1740-1746. This book contains tables of climates and distances, home remedies, and personal financial records. Notable are a list of the holdings of the Philadelphia library in 1741, an elegy to John Chalkley...
