Abstract

Contains correspondence concerning the publications of "First Publishers of Truth," and other Quaker writings in the Journal of the Friends' Historical Society, London, England. Letters from Robert M. Janney. George Vaux, and Isaac Clothier concern contributions to finance the publication of "First Publishers" as a supplement to the Journal. Most of the correspondence is with Norman Penney (1858-1933), Quaker historian and Librarian at the Friends' Reference Library in London.

Abstract Henry Drinker (1734-1809) was a successful Philadelphia Quaker merchant and served as clerk of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. A prominent New York City merchant, Isaac Hicks (1767-1820) was a cousin of the Quaker artist and minister Edward Hicks and of Quaker minister Elias Hicks. Drinker and Hicks were close friends and acted as business agents for each other, reflected in the 1801 correspondence. The collection contains draft correspondence and writings attributed to Isaac P. Hambleton of Carmel Monthly Meeting, Ohio. He was a strong supporter of abolition. The letters and manuscripts express liberal religious and progressive Quaker views.

William Lewis Lamborn genealogical research papers

Abstract

The collection contains genealogical correspondence and notes compiled by William L. Lamborn in preparation for a proposed book on the Lamborn family. Included are a few letters addressd to his brother George S. Lamborn who continued the project after William's early death. Their research was included in Samuel Lamborn's Genealogy of the Lamborn Family published in 1894.

The collection contains a small number of miscellaneous papers relating to efforts within New York Yearly Meeting to support the manumission of enslaved people, abolition, and education of formerly enslaved people, 1778-1870. Most are copies of reports presented to New York Monthly Meeting or to the Yearly Meeting, compiled as a reference file.
