Collections of still photographic types, including paper prints, cased photographs, glass plates, and slides. Historically, when processing a collection, FHL staff have often removed the photographs from the manuscript portion (e.g. RG4 organizational records or RG5 family or personal papers) and stored them as an associated PA photographs collection. FHL staff have also assembled alphabetical files by topic, such as the Meetinghouse Picture File.

Louise K. Clement was an avid photographer who captured foreign landscapes and peoples, urban and idllyic settings, and portraits of people of all ages from approximately 1914-1946.

Peter Dechert photographs of Swarthmore College

Overview

Peter Dechert Associates, a photography company, took thousands of photographs of schools, colleges, and universities between 1952 and 1968. One of these colleges was Swarthmore College. This collection contains a box of negatives and a box of small black and white photographs of various Swarthmore College functions and activities.

George A. Hoadley photograph collection

Overview

The collection contains photographs taken by George A. Hoadley, long-time professor of physics at Swarthmore College and secretary of the Franklin Institute. A founder of the Swarthmore College Camera Club, he was a avid amateur photographer. Approximately 2,000 of his glass negatives were preserved in the family home; they illustrate Swarthmore College and local homes and sites from circa 1899-1929.

Walter Holt photographs of Swarthmore College

Walter Holt, a Media, Pa., professional photographer, was commissioned by Swarthmore College from 1965-1995. He photographed Commencements and Inaugurations, Alumni days, and other special events as well as campus scenes and student and faculty portraits.

Leandre Jackson photographs of Black student life at Swarthmore College

Overview

Leandre Jackson, a professional photographer, graduated from Swarthmore College in 1975 and served as Director of Swarthmore's Black Cultural Center 1975-1977 (full time from 1975-1976 and part time from 1976-1977. This collection consist of photographs taken by Leandre Jackson and displayed in a February 2015 exhibition at the Swarthmore College Library entitled "Proof of Black Life."

Mary Sullivan Patterson (1906-1987) was a Quaker historian and genealogist from Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. This collection includes photographs from Mary Sullivan Patterson's life, including her time at Swarthmore College, as well as family photographs and photographs of Quaker meeting houses.

Richardson-Yarnall family pictures

The collection contains photographs and other images of members of the Richardson and Yarnall families, Pennsylvania Quakers who lived in Philadelpia and Byberry, Pennsylvania. The families were united by the marriage in 1816 of Nathaniel Richardson and Hannah Yarnall of Byberry. Of special interest are the silhouettes of members of the Richardson and Yarnall families created in the Peale Museum, Philadelphia
