Collections of still photographic types, including paper prints, cased photographs, glass plates, and slides. Historically, when processing a collection, FHL staff have often removed the photographs from the manuscript portion (e.g. RG4 organizational records or RG5 family or personal papers) and stored them as an associated PA photographs collection. FHL staff have also assembled alphabetical files by topic, such as the Meetinghouse Picture File.

Trotter Hall Photographs

This collection consists of 15 mounted black and white photographs of scenes in Trotter Hall prior to renovation. Trotter Hall is an academic building on Swarthmore College's campus. It was renovated approximately in 1993.

Abstract

This collection consists of 4 binders of original and copy photographs and negatives, dating from approximately 1880 to 2005, of the Swarthmore Borough, located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Many of the images were used in the book Swarthmore Illustrated: A Centennial History by Susanna K. Morikawa and Patricia C. O'Donnell (1993).

Swayne Family Photographs

Abstract

The Swayne family were Quakers of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Swayne family picture collection contains, albums, framed photographs, and loose photographs that date from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries and which contain a variety of different photograph types (tintypes, cabinet cards, color prints, etc.).

Photographs from the E. Raymond Wilson Papers

Abstract E. Raymond Wilson (1896-1987), a Quaker peace lobbyist, helped found the Friends Committee on National Legislation in 1943 and served as its Executive Secretary until 1962. He also helped organize the Committee on Militarism in Education in 1925. From 1931 to 1943, he served as Field and Education Secretary of the Peace Section of the American Friends Service Committee. Koozma J. Tarasoff photographs of visit to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting

Abstract

Koozma J. Tarasoff (born 1932) is a scholar of the Doukhobors, a Spiritual Christian religious group of Russian origin with a sizeable community in Canada. This collection consists of black and white photographs taken by Tarasoff on a trip to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in March 1983. He photographed Quaker Meeting Houses and schools and prominent Quakers including E. Raymond Wilson and Laurama Pixton.

George School Collection of Meeting House and George School Photographs

Abstract

This collection of photographs was assembled by the George School Archives and transferred to the Friends Historical Library. It consists primarily of photographs of Philadelphia-area Quaker Meeting Houses taken by Gilbert Cope and A.A. Buzby from the 18070s to 1930s. There are also a few photographs by other photographers, photographs of Meeting Houses beyond Philadelphia, and George School graduating classes. George School is a Quaker school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

The Hickman is a senior living community located in the heart of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and which is guided by Quaker principles and tradition. This collection depicts the life of those in the Hickman, providing color and black and white photographs of guests, staff, and the boarding home, from 1896 to 1991.

The Harned photograph collection

Abstract

The Harned was a non-profit boarding home for the elderly in Moylan, PA, under the care of Media Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. It operated under the direction of The Harned Committee. It was established in 1940 through the bequest of Quaker sisters, Phebe and Katherine Harned, and laid down in 1994. The collection contains loose and mounted photographs, clippings, and a scrapbook depicting residential life.

Truman-Underhill Photograph Collection
