Collections of still photographic types, including paper prints, cased photographs, glass plates, and slides. Historically, when processing a collection, FHL staff have often removed the photographs from the manuscript portion (e.g. RG4 organizational records or RG5 family or personal papers) and stored them as an associated PA photographs collection. FHL staff have also assembled alphabetical files by topic, such as the Meetinghouse Picture File.

Anna Wharton Morris family photographs

Abstract Anna Wharton Morris was the youngest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia industrialist and philanthropist. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, active in prison reform and other social reform movements of her day, and was a profilic writer, primarily of short stories and essays. Friends' Home for Children photographs

Abstract Friends' Home for Children (“Friendly Acres”) was established in 1881 in Philadelphia by Hicksite Quakers. The Home was a residential facility for orphans and other children in need, modeled on a homelike environment rather than the large institution more typical of the era. As attitudes towards the care of children changed and costs soared, it was decided in 1979 to phase out the residential program, and the name was changed to Friendly Acres Community Services with its mission focused on...

James H. Scheuer Photographs

Abstract

Photographs of Representative James H. Scheuer, Class of 1942, his family, associates, and constituents. As a Member of Congress, Scheuer met many famous people and many ordinary people and took care to document these meetings. The result is thousands of contact sheets, prints, and negatives recording everything from high level meetings with world leaders to discussions on the street with district residents. This collection complements the papers Sheuer donated at the same time.

Howard Haines Turner photographs

Abstract

Howard Haines Turner (1909-1996) was a Quaker economist and educator who was active in a variety of social concerns, particularly in improving the justice system. He also had a lifelong interest in cooperative communities and worked in South Vietnam under the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). His photograph collection, dating from the early 1900s to about 1995, consists of color black and white and slide photos of his family,. friends, and travel.

This collection, dating from 1942 to 1953, depicts the speakers at the Frankford Friends Forum, which was started in 1930 and would feature a lecture on social justice issues. Founded in 1900, when Hicksite yearly meetings joined together, the FGC is dedicated to holding annual meetings intended to nurture Quaker faith, practice, and inclusivity. In this collection, dated from 1894 to 1997, the yearly FGC meetings are photographed and presented in loose black and white and color photographs that show conference attendees and locations.

Palmer Family Photographs

The Palmer family was a Hicksite Quaker family who settled in Bucks County, PA, but who were also active in Delaware County, especially as several family members attended Swarthmore College. Dating from the 1880s to the 1890s, this collections consists of cabinet cards and cartes de visite that depict members of the Palmer family as well as family relatives or friends.
