Biographical / Historical
The Fund is a memorial to Martha Schofield who founded a school for African-American youth in 1868 at Aiken, SC. The school became known as the Schofield Normal and Industrial School and continued for 82 years. In 1950 it was transferred to the Aiken City Board of Education. On Sept. 20, 1952, a resolution also was adopted by the Schofield Board placing the memorial fund with Trustees of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends as trustee. Friends Fiduciary, as successor to Trustees of PYM, is the current trust for this fund and oversees the work of the Martha Schofield Distribution Committee,
The awards for scholarship are restricted to students from Schofield High School or other high schools Aiken County, South Carolina.
Sanford P. Bradby (1900-1978) had been principal of the Schofield School from 1930-1935 and was chairman of the Schofield Scholarship Fund Committee. His wife succeeded him after his death.
James H. Young of Wilmington, DE, was President of the Board of Trustees.
