Scope and Contents
Correspondence of the related Peaslee/Peasley and Engle families, as collected by Emma P. Engle. Includes letters to her parents while she was a student at Swarthmore College. This collection also includes ephemera received by the family by a number of Quaker institutions: Friends Central School, George School, Young Friends Movement, and Swarthmore College.
The Peaslee/Peasley name is variously spelled with an “e” and with a “y.”

Biographical / Historical
James G. Engle was born in November of 1875 near Mullica Hill, New Jersey, the son of Asa and Elizabeth L. Engle. James G. Engle was in the Class of 1894 of Friends Central School in Philadelphia. Active in Quaker concerns, he served as Clerk of Woodbury Monthly Meeting for many years. He died in 1960.
Ruth Waddington Engle was born in 1879, daughter of Gideon and Emma Peasley. She married James G. Engle in 1904, and together they had two children, James Gardiner Engle Jr., who died in 1960, and Emma P. Engle. Ruth's brother, the internationally-known lawyer, Amos J. Peaslee, was a member of the Class of 1907 at Swarthmore, served on the Board of Managers, and was appointed as Ambassador to Australia in the 1950s.
Emma P. Engle graduated from Swarthmore College in 1928. She worked at the Burlington County Children's Home and then served in France as an aide at the Maison Maternelle. When she returned home she earned a degree in Library Science at Drexel Institute, and then was employed at the Memorial Library in Bound Brook, New Jersey, retiring as Director after 30 years. She was also an Elder at Mickleton Meeting and served on committees for Salem Quarterly and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings. Emma died at Friends Home in Woodstown, New Jersey, in 2004 at the age of 97.
